Attention deficit disorder is a condition that has become more prevalent over the last several years. Not necessarily because it’s a new disease, it just has a name now. When people think of this condition, they usually think of it affecting small children. It’s true that it is most often found in boys of at least 4 years of age, however, it’s been known to affect adults as well. There are many attention deficit disorder symptoms that can lead to a correct diagnosis. We will look at a few of them here.
Attention Deficit Disorder Symptoms
There are several different attention deficit disorder signs that are common in many cases. Typically, these symptoms are in one of two different categories. The first is inattention, and the second is hyperactivity. Any or all of the following symptoms can show up in any child. However, each case is different from person to person.
Inattention
This is the first group of attention deficit disorder symptoms. There are a number of things that fall into this category that are easily observed. A child will have an overall inability to pay attention to specific tasks. This could be a task as simple as tying their shoes. This type of symptom will almost always show up in difficulties in school. The child will be unable to focus on their schoolwork and will often fall behind the rest of the class. If the child is able to focus on the task at hand, it’s only for a short time.
The child will also become very easily distracted under almost any circumstances. Even when the child is being spoken directly to, they will begin to be distracted by just about anything else that is going on. These children will often have many unfinished tasks going on at the same time. Along with this also comes an inability to follow simple commands or directions. They may go on their way to perform said task, but once something else catches their attention, they forget where they were even going.
Hyperactivity
The second group of attention deficit disorder symptoms is the hyperactivity group. Fortunately, this type of symptom is fairly easy to identify. This will commonly show up in a number of different ways, such as talking constantly, inability to sit still, making excessive amounts of noise, and distracting other children intentionally. The child will unable to sit and play calmly and quietly. They will usually be yelling and screaming unnecessarily.
As you can see, these attention deficit disorder symptoms can make diagnosing this condition quite easy in some cases. That’s not to say that the condition is easy to deal with, because it can be quite frustrating. At least, once you have an accurate diagnosis, you can begin seeking proper treatment.
