It used to be that you never even heard of an ailment affecting children called attention deficit disorder. Today, however, you hear of children being diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, or ADD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, and many other disorders that often require medication. You never used to hear about kids on any type of medication, except for maybe when they had colds, but today children are on medication for many things. What has happened in the past few years? Why are our children suddenly being diagnosed with these problems? Well, instead of focusing on the children, maybe we should focus on their environment.
Distractions
It's no wonder why children can't concentrate on anything anymore. Maybe it's not that they have a disorder like attention deficit disorder, maybe it's the fact that there are constant distractions everywhere they look. Children used to go outside and play. They used to use their imaginations. No longer. Today, they have Playstation, Xbox, computer games, television, and that's just to name a few. Just getting them to focus on one thing is a problem when there are so many distractions. Forget about getting them to focus on school lessons or homework when there are more fun things to do. Kids need discipline, they need to be taught priorities, they may not have any sort of disorder, including attention deficit disorder.
Diet
Look at little Jimmy fidgeting and unable to concentrate on anything. He can't even seem to sit still. Is this attention deficit disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or is the fact that everything little Jimmy eats is filled with sugar and other artificial sweeteners and preservatives? Instead of putting little Jimmy on medication for attention deficit disorder, let's try being good parents and role models by teaching him how to eat the right kinds of foods. Teach him how to eat healthy, how to get some exercise and teach him how sugar and other junk foods only harm him in the long run. They leave him lethargic, unable to concentrate and…aren't these the same symptoms that doctors dub attention deficit disorder? Of course they are.
When your child can't concentrate, or he or she is jittery and can't sit still, instead of rushing to the doctor for medication; try monitoring the foods your child eats and the distractions surrounding him or her. Try a little discipline, teach the importance of healthy living and you may find out that your child doesn't have attention deficit disorder after all.
