In any sport, one needs to be calm of mind, relaxed and focused in order to maximize one's performance. Especially for runners, this is very important. Whether running to compete or not, runners can run farther and faster when they're relaxed and focused. I believe the most effective way to achieve these results is through breathing techniques, primarily those employed by yoga.
Yoga employs certain breathing techniques as part of its' exercise. These help yogis to meditate and become centered. They also help one become more focused on the objective at hand. Additionally, they will relax the muscles and mind to help one maximize one's performance. Other benefits to runners, and athletes in general, of yoga breathing techniques are:
- Helps expand the lungs, allowing one to take in more oxygen which supports one's engaged muscles.
- Reduces strain on any ligaments by relaxing your muscles and diaphram.
- After the workout, it's a great way to calm the body and mind down, and reduce the heart rate.
These are just some of the benefits that yoga's Pranayama(breath control) will have for runners and athletes in general. There is one program in specific called Runner's Yoga which is perfect for any runner looking to learn how to do these poses, and the science behind how they help. Runner's Yoga is short, generally 30 minutes or shorter, which makes it a great compliment to any running regime. It's even used and endorsed by Olympic athletes!
