Some cities just know how to attract top entertainment, and in Canada one of those cities is Vancouver, British Columbia. The city shined in all aspects when it was on display for the world to see earlier in 2010 when the 2010 Olympic Winter Games came to Vancouver. Most of the visitors may have come to see their athletes compete toward a medal, but Vancouver showed it has more to offer than just a place for sporting fun. The music scene in Vancouver is as brilliant as ever, shown by the top names coming to town this spring. Vancouver is the place to be for all entertainment as the weather warms.
One place locals know to flock to when top entertainment is in order is the Vogue Theatre. It has been a staple of the city's entertainment scene for decades, and it has something for everyone. It was established in 1941, boasting impressive designs by architects Kaplan & Sprachman. The 62-foot neon sign that marks the Vogue has been a well-known landmark in the city ever since. Inside, theater fans will find an art-deco style that boasts top acoustics and great sight lines.
The Vogue Theatre hosts everything from films to live events like top concerts. The Vogue Theatre brings in a Canadian favorite from May 13 to May 15 for a three-night performance when Our Lady Peace takes the stage. The talented foursome epitomizes the Canadian post-grunge scene, and their following of fans only grows with each release. The band first came together when the founding members were students in Toronto in the early 1990s. Their first moniker was "As If," but landed on their current name because of a poem by Mark Van Doren.
It wasn't long before Our Lady Peace landed a major record deal and released their debut, Naveed. A tour with Alanis Morissette gave them exposure in Canada and the U.S., sparking chart success in both countries. Their lineup has shifted over the years, but that hasn't slowed their production of albums. Since their debut, they have released six studio albums, hitting the charts with singles like "Clumsy," "One Man Army" and "All You Did Was Save My Life." Their latest, 2009's Burn Burn, continued the trend.
The sound will take on an acoustic bend over at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre when David Gray takes the stage on May 14. The singer/songwriter has experienced both an underground cult following and mainstream superstardom, and he hasn't lost his emotive way of crafting touching tunes. The British native started making music as a young man, and released his first album in 1992. After a few albums lingered near the bottom of the U.K. charts, he caught the eye of the worldwide music scene with the release of White Ladder in 1998. He has followed with more top albums, and his singles like "Babylon," "This Year's Love" and "The One I Love" have made waves on the world charts. His latest release, Draw the Line, hit stores in September of 2009.
