Sitting in my room at the hospital I looked outside the window and saw the gentle rain and birds flying in the sky. It was a good time to write a poem for my sweetheart as I waited for her to pick me up after delicate arthroplasty surgery on four knuckles of my right hand.
My damaged right hand required four new prosthetic implants. I was hoping for titanium but had to settle for the very durable carbon fiber variety. The doctor promised to use that material if possible but needed to have another option available if there was too much damage to the knuckles. I dreaded the thought of receiving silicone implants that would be necessary if the damage was too severe. It was difficult to sleep the night before knowing that a substandard procedure may be performed.
I monitored her location on my iPhone as she traveled from home to the hospital to meet me upon discharge. Her total travel distance was about 200 kilometers giving me ample time to finish a romantic love poem for her.
This poem was personally written for her and much different from the other one already in progress. The other poem I started the previous morning will more vividly describe the events pertaining to the surgery. You are so far away from me
My heart grows sad without your touch
I long to taste your absent kiss.
I hear your voice and miss you much
but soon you will restore my bliss.
Softly rain sprinkles on the ground
as sultry clouds go rolling by.
Raising my head I look around
and see the larks soar ever high.
The time draws near till once again
you are with me but now I see
how slowly time does hurry when
you are so far away from me.
My lust for life was the reason I decided to undergo the surgery. I could have lived with the damage caused by many years of rheumatoid arthritis but took a chance with the procedure.
My strength and ability to use my hands would have been greatly decreased if the backup option would have been elected. Even the range of possible motion would have been drastically reduced if the silicone implants were used.
The pain not eliminated by my Oxycontin medication during recovery is actually welcomed knowing that the surgery was a success.
My right hand should function normally with much less pain in the future.

Composers Corner: A Brief Biography of Franz Schubert
Franz Schubert lived a short but amazingly prolific life, leaving behind a legacy of seven symphonies (plus one that remained famously unfinished upon his death), some 30 chamber music pieces, and more than 600 songs. His life in Vienna included much time spent at the city's ubiquitous coffee houses, popular venues for radical political thought as well as literature and poetry, the latter providing Schubert with lyrics to some of his most famous art songs. The first video clip that accompanies this article features baritone Dietrich Fischer-Diskau (with pianist Murray Perahia) singing "Dream of Spring" from Schubert's song cycle, "Die Winterreise." The second clip is the closing movement ("Agnus Dei") from Schubert's Mass in G, from a 2009 performance by CityCleveland & Quire Cleveland, a northern Ohio music ensemble....

Greatness - Then and Now
Dede W Casad

Could it be that I am the first person who doesn't understand the inherent beauty in our art and music? Could it be that I am the first person, who will take the risk to ask: why do we not have artists and musicians like Michelangelo and Mozart or Da Vinci and Beethoven today?...
