Many people attend storage unit auction sales without having the slightest clue as to what they are going to do with the contents should they get the high bid. Storage unit auctions is a business and just like any other business you need a plan. No, I don't mean a complicated business plan, but at least a plan of what and how you are going to make the most money from your unit. There are five ways that I know of that can be used to dispose of the merchandise. I have personally used four of them with great success.
- Online Auctions - With eBay, Ioffer, Amazon and other auction sites, listing the smaller items from your contents is just a matter of cleaning up the item, taking pictures, and listing on the auction site. If you decide to put large items on online auction sites be sure you have a way to load and ship it.
- Weekly City Auction - In most cities there are auction houses that have weekly auctions at least once a week. They allow people to bring in merchandise and let them auction it off for a 10 to 25 percent commission. This is a fun way to rid yourself of some of the furniture and other large items. You can also bid on other people things while at the auction and you get them so cheap you can sell them online also.
- Flea Markets - Just about everyone has been to a flea market and bought items before. If you want a ready made guaranteed stream of potential customers then this venue might be for you. Most flea market buyers today want nice used items or new items, so don't take any junk that you would sell for a dime.
- Garage Sales - This way of getting items sold is one of my favorites because I'm just a garage sale junkie! At a garage sale you can even advertise some of the larger ticket items a head of time in the local penny saver newspaper. Also here is where you can put out all the ten cent and quarter items and still make money. If you have a garage sale on a regular basis, say every six weeks, people will start to be regulars at your sale. Why? because they know you will have an endless supply of new, inexpensive items to buy.
- Resale Shop - I have personally known people that bought up storage units from auction just to fill their thrift and resale shop. Furniture was a big ticket seller for them. What was too small or inexpensive, they just sold at the other venues listed above. Between their eBay business and shop they were making in the thousands each and every month.
Remember that because you are bidding on the entire storage unit, items are costing you mere pennies. You won't believe how much is in those boxes and bags. If you are lucky that occasional diamond ring and antique will be in there and you will feel like you hit the jackpot.!
