Babies from 6 – 9 months Babies at this stage in their development are very fragile, a lot of parents are apprehensive about taking them out in the car at all, but as mentioned previously sometimes you may have no other choice but to take your baby along with you. In order to best protect your baby it is recommended that you use a rear-facing car seat. The advantage of this seat is that it can be used in front passenger seat if the airbags have been deactivated and rear passenger seats. The car seat provides the greatest support for the child's head, neck and spine so it is recommended to use this kind of seat as long as possible.

Children from 9 months – 4 years The next category shifts focus to a seat that allows the child to look forward and see what is going on. Again children should use this kind of seat until they reach the weight limit or their head appears above the top of the child seat. This kind of seat has a secure harness that minimises movement and a strap between the legs prevents the child from slipping out the bottom or, for toddlers. wriggle free.

Children from 4 – 6 years This type of seat is the biggest step to a full sized adult seat as it doesn't have a harness and instead uses cushions to raise the child to the correct height and correct position so that the adult seat belt fits them as comfortably and safely as possible. It may be useful to get a seat belt cover to prevent the edges of the seatbelt rubbing.

Children from 6 – 11 years At this point the child will normally only need a booster cushion, some booster seats allow you to detach the back to adapt and save needing to buy another car seat. This seat will again raise the child to a height and position of an adult so that the seat belt operates correctly.

When buying any car seats you should make sure that it is secure and is setup correctly, many shops will demonstrate how to use the seat so that it protects the child effectively. There are other car safety features such as child locks that you should make sure are working in your car to prevent any hazards.

If you have to get a family car then consider car loans and car finance deals that could help you afford a car that meets your needs and is safe and reliable for your family.
