"Saturday night, my father, John Alderson, a retired Air Force pilot and a healthy and vibrant 87 years of age, was struck by a car and died in St. Petersburg, Florida," Sandy Alderson said in a statement.

"Our entire family is devastated by his loss. He was a beloved father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all of us. He and I shared many baseball experiences over the years and he was excited about Spring Training and Opening Day at Citi Field. I am terribly saddened that we will not be able to share those new experiences together."

Alderson, 87, was in the middle of the 3600 block of 4th St. North in St. Petersburg, Fla., at 11:54 p.m. on Saturday when he was struck by a 21-year-old driver, St. Petersburg Police told ESPN New York. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center and was pronounced dead 45 minutes later. The driver of the vehicle has not been charged, and the investigation is still ongoing, police said.

"We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sandy's father," Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. "Fred, Saul and all of us at the Mets send our heartfelt condolences to Sandy, Linda and their family. We've asked Sandy to take whatever time he needs as it relates to this terrible personal loss. Our thoughts are with the Aldersons at this difficult time."

John Alderson was a veteran of three wars, serving in the Air Force in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He remained active even at age 87, as he was playing softball three times a week, his son David told the St. Petersburg Times. David, 50, also said Alderson was "extremely healthy" and "87 going on 40."
