What to Expect from a Boat Auction

by linkroll

posted in Recreation and Sports : Boating

Boat auctions are actually one of the most popular types of auctions in existence today, although not many people realize it. So why would people choose to use boat auctions instead of just buying one on their own and not dealing with any possibility of a hassle? In fact, boats that are bought at boat auctions are often purchased at a fraction of their original dealer price, making them an excellent bargain for most people. Boat auctions also give those with credit problems a chance to purchase a boat because many auction houses offer financing to the people who bid on their auctions. And many people find that older, antique boats – which are hard to find anywhere – often go up for auction after someone passes away, giving them an opportunity to find a rare treasure.

The auction process itself can differ from auction house to auction house, so some minor details might be different but in most cases, the process is very similar. Some auction houses insist that their bidders actually register with them so that they can keep track of who is bidding but others do not. Either way auctions then proceed and boats are put up for sale. Some auctions are silent auctions where bids are put into boxes or signs are just raised and some are spoken; either way, whoever goes home with the boat is the one who is willing to pay the most.

Boat auctions are usually very simple things: the boat in question will go up, its information will be given and then bidders can choose to bid or not. In almost all cases, people that put boats that go up for auction are required to provide the auction house – and the new owner – with paperwork that proves the boat’s history and condition. This helps to ensure that no boats that are being auctioned are stolen and it helps cut down on the number of people who claim boats come to them in bad condition.

However, there are things you should do before you go to an auction. To avoid this, do your research; determine what you want in a boat, what you are planning to use it for and what type of boat will best suit your needs before you even start looking. Try to figure out what size boat will best fit your needs so you aren’t coming home with one that’s too small to really use or far too big to handle. Most importantly, don’t settle – there are always more boat auctions but a boat you buy can be hard to get rid of.
