A trade union comprises of a group of workers and union leaders. These form a membership role to take care of the welfare of employees of a certain factory or institution. They make negotiations about the employees' wages, working conditions, basic amenities, grievances and collective bargaining terms for various issues related to salary, bonuses, incentives etc.
There are three types of unions
Company union - this represents the members of a single company or firm taking care of their needs.
General union or industrial union acts as a representative for employees of many firms of the same industry and
Craft union representing employees of a specific field of skill like artisans, tailors etc.
To join a trade union as a member you should sign a contract and agree to stick to the rules of the union mentioned in the contract. A copy of this agreement should be kept with each member individually or it can be published on the website of the respective Trade union.
Rules made by the union heads should be maintained and if rules seem to have been broken by the union leaders members will have to sort out the issues amicably first before approaching the certification officer for further help. The unions are operated exclusively for the benefit of employees. Hence employees should be co-operative and obey the rules by all means.
Complaints to the certification officer of a trade union requires a certain time frame, for instance, you should be a member for a certain period of time, according to the labor union agreement that you have signed. Hence it is safe to avoid going legal with petty issues that can be sorted out within the union itself. The union is very beneficial for employees to get their rights sorted out amicably with their employers.
