If you are in the market for wiring and cable assemblies, regardless of your project, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to fail to research your potential provider's certifications and credentials. To some, certifications can often seem like arbitrary letters attached to the company's products, or slapped on a website in an attempt to build trust. Here are a few reasons why you should spend a little more time finding out exactly what those letters mean.
1. The Need for Certifications
The fact of the matter is, custom cable manufacturing certifications prove that the company adheres to regulations for safety, quality, and customer service. It also proves that they are regularly assessed by these certification agencies to ensure that they are maintaining their high standards. When a company has the initials of their accrediting agency stamped to their product, you can rest assured that that product has met all necessary requirements and is certified in quality.
2. Quality of Products and Services
One of the most common accreditation agencies is the ISO or International Standards Organization. This entity provides standards of quality for a plethora of products and services. In order to become ISO certified, a company often has to put in place specific processes, as well as staff development on quality assurance and spotting inefficiencies in the production line. Essentially this certificate guarantees the safety and satisfaction of the end customer of the product.
3. Specific Industries Require Different Regulations
As you might expect, different industries are often regulated in different ways, and have different requirements in order to meet their certification. One of the more common organizations that regulates industries related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas, and other types of manufactured goods is the Underwriters Laboratories usually known as UL. This organization performs testing on the actual product in order to award certificates to the company. A product with a UL stamp indicates that the product has been tested according to the highest standards of quality and safety. These specifications are a huge token of trust amongst consumers.
4. Environmental Problems and Restricted Materials
Beyond just certifications for quality and safety, there is also certifications for companies that have high standards for the environmental impact of their products. For instance, many companies are certified by an environmental agency that they do not use lead, or other harmful chemicals and materials in their products.
5. There are Certifications Specific to Custom Cable
Within the custom cable manufacturing industry there is one particular governing body when it comes to the quality and safety of cable and wire harnesses. That is the Wiring Harness Manufacturer's Association or WHMA. At a minimum the A-620 standards certification is a huge indication that a supplier's technicians have undergone hands-on training and are experts in producing a quality product.
