Cavernous sinus is a system located behind the eyes on both sides of the skull base. It is full with blood. This is one of the most important systems for your eyes since it comprises carotid artery or nerve which allow your face and eyes to have sensation. It also lets the muscle move your eyes.
Just like another type of tumor, tumor of cavernous sinus can also be benign and malignant. It is the main cause for cavernous sinus syndrome. Commonly, there are three types of tumors which affect this system such as carcinoma, meningiomas, and metastases.
Sinus tumor is considered as a rare tumor. This type of tumor can be caused by some different factors. Exposure to dust and vapors and smoking are two factors that can lead to this tumor. Another factor can be trauma and infection to the area. It is potential to develop the tumor in cavernous sinus system.
The most common symptom of sinus tumor which may come to you is double vision. Some other symptoms include difficulty breathing, periodic drowsiness, weak pulse, and increased intercranial pressure. People suffering sinus tumor may experience double vision and headache when the tumors presses the skulls. However, the symptom from one person to another may be varied. It depends highly on the size and exact tumor location. Sometimes, people who suffer this disorder experience slurred speech, dizziness, seizures, coma, or one-sided paralysis.
There are some treatments which can heal this disorder. The most popular treatment is a full or partial resection or tumor removal. However, it will not always be the right option due to the growth and location of the tumor. If the sinus tumor is still small, the doctor may suggest for endoscopic surgery as an invasive treatment. On the other hand, if the tumor is getting spread from sinus system to the cheek, rain, eye, nerve, or any other adjacent area, the patients will need more advanced treatment. Most of the doctors combine the treatments to improve the effect of the treatments for the patients' need.
