Thyroid cancer is caused when the thyroid gland gets infested with abnormal or alien cells. The thyroid glands acts as a regulator of the bory's metabolism, in essence it determines the speed of the body's various processes. The thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid gland and it is this hormone that helps the body to burn calories and produce energy.
Unlike most other cancers is not listed as a very dangerous or fatal disease. This is because thyroid cancer, once detected, can be easily cured; especially so if it is detected in the early stages of its appearance. Another blessing for patients suffering from it is the fact that the treatment itself works fairly well and results are almost always positive. There is also little risk of running a relapse of thyroid cancer after it has been treated properly and completely.
The exact cause of thyroid cancer has not yet been pin-pointed but most experts say that it is largely caused by a sustained exposure to radiation. Most people who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer have either been exposed to environmental radiation or that received from medical processes. This does not imply that an x-ray of your teeth or gums will give you thyroid cancer. However radiation received in the earlier years of one's life, particularly x-rays of the chest, neck or head could result in the formation of cancerous cells in the thyroid gland.
Most often thyroid cancer is detected when doctors find a nodule or lump in the area of the thyroid gland, which sits in the neck. This is generally followed by a biopsy of the gland. The procedure of the biopsy entails the removing of a certain amount of tissue from the relevant area and its subsequent examination to check whether it is malignant or not. The test results may not always be definite. In such cases of doubt, the entire thyroid gland is removed from the neck to wipe out any possibilities of the occurrence of cancer.
Cancerous thyroid glands are treated with radioactive iodine or surgery. Radiation or chemotherapy can be used but are generally not preferred by physicians. The prescribed treatment for this is always based on factors of age, severity of the condition and the type of it It is important to remember that thyroid cancer, though removable and curable, cannot altogether be prevented.
Medullary thyroid cancer is an extrememly rare type of this disease. This condition is largely genetic and there is a heightenend risk of contracting this disease if it runs in the family. The best possible treatment of this disease is to remove the thyroid gland completely.
