Work Profile

The job requires you to work like a supervisor no doubt, but the focus areas are beyond just supervision. It is a very responsible position and the officer is required to play a vital role in the existing criminal justice system by monitoring/supervising offenders who are released from imprisonment.

The prisoners who are to be supervised are usually those who have been obeying prison rules, performing prison jobs well, and have been showing progress in rehabilitation programs.

Roles And Responsibilities

The officers are required to prepare pre-sentence reports. S/he must assess the risk probability to the community; may be in the form of criminal behavior in the future, and the need for compensation.

These pre-sentence reports are very critical to the systematic administration of criminal justice. A copy of this report has to be provided, before sentencing, to each offender, and/or their counsel. Also, the officer should send a copy of this report to the incarceration agency which is to be used for classification of the offender to ensure ideal placement of the offender subsequently, better utilizing prison programs and resources.

Skills Required

The job requires one to be good at collecting, organizing, and understanding/analyzing information. The officers are also required to be good with oral and written communication skills with a broad knowledge of criminal justice system. They are also required to understand the roles, relationships, and responsibilities given to the courts. In addition, with a cosmopolitan culture spreading across all nations, a Parole officer must have the ability to work with a diverse population group and wide variety of government agencies. Handling people with care is a requirement. They must also accept the potential threats of working with a criminal crowd.
