Who would have thought that talking on your mobile phone would be the root cause of so many accidents in the United States? But truth be told, talking on your cell phone is incredibly dangerous because it leads to accidents such as driving off the side of the road, rear ending another driver in front of you or striking pedestrians who are trying to share the road.

When I first learned my license to drive, I didn't even have a cell telephone. However, shortly after I had been driving, mobile phones seemed to pop up as an overnight sensation. I went to the mall with my father to purchase my very first cell phone, which I only received after begging and then convincing my father that a lone female driving hundreds of miles to another state for college after being on spring break was better off with a cellular just in case there was an emergency.

Recently, there have been a number of states within the United States that have banned cell phone use due to the inherent dangers that it causes, the main one being that it is incredibly distracting to use while driving. If you think about it, when you are driving, your eyes are supposed to be on the road. That is what you are supposed to be focusing on. However, with all of the people who are out there today, it is a wonder that there aren't more accidents with mobile phone use. Now, if a police officer sees you using your cell phone to text or send messages while you are driving, you are pulled over and issued a citation. In the state of New York where there are millions of residents, police officials don't mess around. You are only allowed to use your cell phone for audible conversations. And even then, the conversations that you have can only take place if the person who is driving has a hands-free set for their cell phone.

Once we realize how dangerous cell phones can be in our society, perhaps then we'll take care to put them on silent, turn them to the vibrate setting or simply stow them someplace where they won't distract us or be tempting while we are driving. The roads would certainly be a lot safer if everyone was a little more focused.
