How to Install or Replace a CD Player

The Myth and the Truth:

A tighet budget and a better car-audio system are inversely proportional, right? Wrong! If you know how to assemble and install a stereo system yourself. All you need is some knowledge and experience on car-mechanics and wiring, and a new head unit in the dashboard is yours. It also takes time to find the right audio cd-system unless you can construct the components as well. Therefore, an early preparation is recommended.

How To Remove The Player:

 Remove the dash panel holding the player.

 Disconnect the power cable from the battery.

 Unscrew and slide out the old head unit.

Push to Play:

Either buy the components of the audio compact disc player and conjoin, or buy it from the market. Make sure its dimensions fit the encasement in the control panel. There are specific stereo systems available for specific models of cars featured in the online auto forums; unless you are hell bent on something particular, it's a wise choice to opt from the category. It's also because of the wiring harness that is specific to the car's make and model (many auto reviews also provide concise details on this aspect). Anything else shall invite extra hassle and render the wiring-in-a-snap to a cumbersome process. The minimum one shall require are tools and materials; screwdrivers, wire strippers, wire cutters and electrical tape would make a fine armoury. Take advantage of the car-manual, if available, for removing the dash panel and the existing radio.*

Taking the whole cd-player unit shall reveal either a single plug connected to multiple wires or a bunch of individual wires that connect to the various points of the playing unit.

Assuming that the wiring harness has been fixed to the car, plug the connector to it. The other end of the connector shall go into the back of the new stereo. If there's a lack for one, the positive wire from each speaker should be first connected to the positive connector at the back of the new player. The negative wires come next; they connect to the negative connector of the cd player. The ground wire (-/black) wire of the stereo is to be put across a screw or a bolt near the mounting. A single wire, however; from the speakers signifies chassis-grounding; a new speaker wiring shall solve the problem. The 12 constant and ignition power wires (+/red) then should be connected to the new cd player. A re-check with the installation manual is recommended. In case of a single connector, the wiring harness shall have another plug housing the points for the wires coming from the player. The player then goes into the mounting bracket (usually supplied as a part of the system) and then slid into the slot in the dash. Testing follows after connection to the power supply is restored by connecting the main power cable to the battery. If things seem alright, screw the front panel of the cd player in.

Alternate Methods:

It pays to know the alternatives and though the automotive news in many a car forums have mentioned on the same, still we thought of putting it here. Starting with the Aux-in port; certain players have the auxiliary port on the front panel that can be connected to any portable audio player. A nice option if the budget is fit for a portable player but not a full-fledged car audio system. In case it's absent, one can be added for a few dollars.
