Cat potty training is one of the most important parts to make her accustomed to the family life. A new kitten can bring lots of happiness in the family, but the enthusiasm is easily thwarted when trying to potty train. Training the cat requires time and patience, and you should not throw in the towel and surrender to her demands.
Generally, the required potty training to the kittens is given by the mother cats, and you don’t have to worry about kitten using the litter box. But, if you get the motherless or orphaned cat, you will have to do the cat potty training yourself. Do not potty train the newborn kittens, as infants need some kind of stimulation to pass urine or empty themselves. This can be done by stimulating their genital area with the wet and warm cloth after every meal. Once your kitten becomes skilled in the basic activities like walking and feeding, you can start with the proper cat potty training.
The first step towards cat potty training is buying a proper litter box for your pet. Sides of the box should be low, so that the kitten can easily step over its top, and get inside and outside the box. After every meal, put the kitten in the box, and scratch the litter slightly. This will indicate that the place is meant for urinating and defecating. With due practice and passage of time, the kitty will learn to evacuate herself only inside the box.
If your kitten is not too keen on using the litter box directly, you can try the other option of cage for cat potty training. Make sure that the cage is big enough so that the water bowl, food and litter box can be easily placed. Let cat choose the places for different activities inside the cage. Cats are quite meticulous, and do not use the same space for excretion and eating.
When doing the cat potty training, you have to be very patient, especially if there are accidents. During the training, be firm, yet patient. You need to follow the consistent pattern along with the positive approach. Once done in a correct manner, your efforts of cat potty training will not be futile, and you will not have to worry about dirty and soiled carpets any more.
If your cat shows nervousness or resistance during training, just slow down the pace, and make the changes very gradually. During cat potty training, place the small trash can in the bathroom so that the training area can be kept clean. Cover the soil with tinfoil, or remove them from your house during the training period.
