Is the OnePus 2 a Flagship Killer?

New smartphone maker OnePlus has been on somewhat of a roll for the past year. They launched the aggressively priced OnePlus One to a huge amount of sales success. The One was not available in stores or sold through any online retailers like Amazon. The only way you could get your hands on the phone was by registering for an invite to buy the phone. While the somewhat convoluted process and the long wait times turned off many potential One buyers, the phone was still a huge success. So much so that OnePlus struggled to keep up with demand and constantly ran out of stock, which was the reason for the long wait periods.
With the new OnePlus 2, the company is sticking to the same tried and tested modus operandi. Potential buyers have to still signup and await an invitation for the chance to give OnePlus their money and get their hands on a 2. Why then, has the 2 already become such a huge hit, posting incredible sales numbers and also fuelling demand for accessories like OnePlus 2 Cases? The answer is simple. The 2 isn't just a great phone for the price, it is a great phone period. A fast, latest generation, quad-core Snapdragon processor, an incredible 4 Gb of RAM a fingerprint sensor and one of the best smartphone cameras on the market currently, are just some of the 2's impressive specs. The only real hardware quibbles that the 2 has are an abrasive back that improves grip but may not be to the liking of some OnePlus 2 users and the lack of NFC. The first problem is easily solved with a huge range of OnePlus 2 cases available. The second is only a problem in countries where Google Pay has already become ubiquitous and for users that actually use the wireless payment system.
There area also a few software quirks that render some apps looking dull and grey rather than using the bright colour palette of Android Lollipop. OnePlus says it is aware of these bugs and is preparing a software update that will eliminate all these minor issues as well as improve the speed and responsiveness of the camera.
So, while early adopters of the OnePlus will have a few issues, by the time you read this, most of those should have been fixed with software updates. What will not have changed is the incredible value and performance of the 2. OnePlus has claimed that the 2 is not just a 2015 flagship killer but a "2016 flagship killer". While this may be taking the usual marketing bombast one step too far, it is hard to argue that the OnePlus 2 is not one of the most compelling flagship smartphones available on the market today and one that is exerting downward pressure on the prices that manufacturers can demand for their top of the line phones. Whether you care for the phone itself or not, the impact the OnePlus 2 is having on the market as a whole, can only benefit consumers.
