Copywriting Tips - Benefits, Benefits, Benefits by Steven Wagenheim

I got the greatest newsletter the other day from my friend Paul Myers, who happens to be one of the greatest copywriters on the planet. In it, he talked about benefits and pretty much ripped copywriters a new one for not getting it. I thought the issue was priceless. I'm going to share with you my own personal thoughts on benefits as applied to copywriting. If you want to become a top notch copywriter, you'll take these to heart.

Human beings are a strange lot. They say one thing but more often than not, they mean another. Let's take the person who says he wants a lot of money. This is a common feeling of a lot of people. Who doesn't want a lot of money? Okay, maybe there are a few people out there who don't need money, or at least say that they don't. However, most regular folks want money, plain and simple.

But why? Why do they want money? When you start asking the questions, you get a lot of different answers, such as taking vacations, buying houses, investing in stocks and so on. But why do these people want to do these things? Why do they want to take vacations? Why do they want to buy a house? Why do they want money to do these things? Is it the things themselves that they want?

The answer, whether people want to admit it or not, is because they think that these "things" will make them happy, or more specifically, give them a better quality of life. That's the ultimate thing that each person wants. They want to have a life that they can look back on when they're about to meet their maker and say, "I had a good life." It's all about emotions. And the way to reach these emotions, as a copywriter, is to point out the benefits that the person will get IF they purchase your product.

The key, and this is what so many copywriters don't get, is digging down to the core of those benefits. It's not the house that's the benefit. It's the quality of life. It's the parties that you can throw in that house and the people you can show it off to in order to make YOU feel better. That's what it's all about.

So when you go about writing your sales letter, remember to focus on the benefits, or you're going to lose your prospect.

To YOUR Success,
