Acrylic or a generic term for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a useful, clear plastic that resembles glass, but has properties that make it superior to glass in many ways. Developed in 1928 and introduced to the market in 1933 as Plexiglas. Today we commonly refer to acrylic glass as Plexiglas.

Since acrylic is easy to mold into various shapes, it is used to make various products, such as shower doors, bath enclosures, windows and skylights. Due to its shutter resistant and light weight in nature it is often chosen over glass. It is many times stronger compare to your conventional glass, making it much more impact resistant and therefore safer in your home environment. Another amazing benefit from acrylic is its great insulation property. Since it insulates better than glass, acrylic can potentially save you hundreds per year on your heating bills.

Another great advantage of acrylic is that it is only half the weight compare to glass. Due to this reason acrylic is much easier to work with and this versatile product can be easily cut, mold and sawed where as glass must be scored. When it comes to appearance acrylic's transparency rate of 93% makes acrylic the clearest material known. Very thick glass will have a green tint, while acrylic remains clear.
