It can be quite frustrating when a man simply retreats into his thoughts and refuses to discuss what he's thinking of. This becomes even more unbearable when, all of a sudden, she feels he is withdrawing from the relationship. There are reasons for this, some of which are:

He is bored.
Men like to chase women, they enjoy the challenge of the hunt, they like the adventure of it all. So when a woman becomes too available for him, when things become too routine and predictable, he automatically becomes bored of the relationship.

He is choking.
No one wants to be tied on a leash, let alone a short one so when a man cannot have time and space for himself, when she shadows his every move, when she wants to probe into everything he does, he starts feeling suffocated. He might withdraw just to get a breath of fresh air.

He is threatened.
Many men cannot bear the thought of losing their freedom -- this is the idea they have in their minds about commitment. Sometimes, a man withdraws for fear that he would no longer have the freedom he so values.

Things are moving too fast for him.
Men and women have different time schedules when it comes to relationships. What a woman may find as the "right time" could be "too soon" for a man. When she is moving too fast in making something more of the relationship than he is ready for, he might withdraw.

He isn't ready (financially).
Although it is now socially acceptable for women to earn as much as -- or even more than -- men, some guys still find it uncomfortable to not be able to be financially capable to provide for the woman. Being financially insecure is one reason why some men withdraw from a relationship.

He is in doubt.
A man may find, in the course of the relationship that she isn't the one for him. There could be some little incompatibilities or a difference in lifestyle. If, in the back of his head, he has a nagging feeling of doubt, he may back away.

He has fallen out of love.
Men can't stand women crying. A man who is sensitive enough doesn't want to deliberately hurt a woman, and he simply doesn't have the courage to see her shed tears. A man who wants out may try to break it to her gently by withdrawing, giving her the chance to break up with him instead.
