Most of us might have eagerly waited for our wisdom tooth to start coming, at least it was so in my case! There is this interesting misconception in people that it brings wisdom along with it and we grow wise after waking up one fine day. But some people wait their whole life and they never grow wise at all..hah!
Jokes apart, wisdom teeth usually emerge between the 17 to 24 years at the back of the mouth. It can be one or at max four of them. And some people never have them. Should they be called the lucky or unlucky few? That is a question to ponder over!! It usually does not cause any problem unless there is less space for it to emerge and sometimes it even tends to emerge sideways which is lethal. If this is the case there is scope for infection or swelling. Many of us tend to ignore this and do not do anything about it, this way we are making danger knock our doors.
It is always advisable to remove a wisdom tooth if it is causing problems. Sometimes antibiotics are used to clear the infection but the cure is only temporary. Hence a permanent cure to it is an operation.
The conduct of the operation is a step by step process. Your surgeon will prepare you for the operation. Smokers are asked to avoid smoking as it may cause after effects. A consent form should be signed. The operation is under anesthesia so that the patient does not feel the pain. The surgeon cuts the jaws and takes out the wisdom teeth. The length of the operation will depend upon the strength of the teeth. Once the operation is over the anesthesia will take some time to wane off and once the person gains consciousness, he may leave. The nurse gives the person some instructions regarding the care of the teeth and gums which needs to be followed strictly. Post operation pains are quite common for which painkillers are recommended. The patient is required to follow up with the surgeon after the treatment and take proper care that he does not have and hard food and does not brush the operated region until it heals. The stitches can be removed between one week and ten days depending upon the gravity of the operation and quickness of healing.
It is sometimes seen that the person may have some serious reactions after the operation. This could range from severe pain in the operated region to continuous bleeding to very high temperature and breathing difficulties. One must immediately catch up with his doctor under such conditions.
Some serious side effects of wisdom teeth removal are jaw stiffness, numbness of upper or lower lip, bleeding and irritation. The surgeon will give you certain drugs to combat these inconveniences. The gravity of the situation varies from person to person depending upon the structure of the mouth, arrangement of teeth etc. proper post operation care should be taken to avoid problems.
