Herbal remedies for depression are a popular natural choice for treatment of depressive illness. This is mainly because herbs are found in nature and the side effects of consuming natural ingredients are limited. However, this does not mean all herbal remedies for depression are effective and safe to administer. It is important to communicate this information with your doctor before proceeding with the natural treatment.
Although herbs are found in nature, they have a specific chemical structure that also alters the body chemistry. As such, there can be significant side effects from such compounds as well. In many cases, the problem per se is not that there are side effects; it is that the herbal remedies are not regulated as to either their safety or efficacy. Without known efficacy, it is not possible to make an informed decision about the risks from exposure.
For instance, there is the flowering tops of the plant called St John's Wort; also known as Hypericon, Klamath Weed and Goat Weed. This is an ages old herbal remedy for mental illness, but has also been used as a sedative, a balm against bites and wounds, and a pain killer. Modern herbalists recommend it for use against anxiety, depression and sleep disorders and apply it in the form of a tea or fusion or as a tablet. Medical Scientists are divided about its effect, some agreeing that it may serve some use but others arguing that it is no more effective than a placebo. Some side effects have been reported and it is recommended that a doctor be consulted before use especially if other medication is being used.
In addition, a lack of regulation also means that supplements available in the store are not rigorously tested for purity or safety. Individuals who sell these herbal treatments may act as expert but have not necessarily obtained any specialized training or certification either. It is important to keep these issues in mind when undertaking an herbal remedy for depression so that fully informed decisions can be made.
