Diabetes is caused by a disruption in insulin production in the body. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas when the level of blood sugar increases. Mainly this happens after a full meal. With the help of insulin, glucose moves from the blood into the cells. The cellular components turn the glucose into energy. When glucose does not enter cells, it stays in the blood and is filtered by the kidneys which will later eliminate it from the bloodstream.
This is a chronic disease that occurs when insulin in your body does not work as it should. Common symptoms of diabetes include thirst, constant urination, appetite increase, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing infections. In order to recognize diabetes as early as possible, you should familiarize yourself with the different types of diabetes as well as common symptoms.
Type 1 diabetes is a less common life threatening condition. Anyone suffering with this type of diabetes need complete insulin replacement because their body does not make sufficient amounts of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common. In the United States, about 90% of diabetes cases are type 2.
Gestational diabetes, is the type which occurs during pregnancy due to specific hormonal changes in the body of an expectant mother.
Diabetes is almost always accompanied by obesity and high cholesterol. It tends to run through family history. If your family is at high risk, you should check with your family doctor.
It can be prevented and controlled by altering your diet. When you eat a product that is high in sugar, your pancreas will begin to produce more insulin in order to turn the sugar into energy. Saturated fat are transformed by your liver into sugar, which then triggers the same response of your pancreas.
