Enlarged prostates affect half of all men over the age of 50. Enlarged prostates occur when the urethra narrows and makes it more difficult for urine to pass through. Dealing with the symptoms of enlarged prostates can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. There are ways in which you can help to prevent enlarged prostates and guard against prostate cancer.
You are suffering from an enlarged prostate and you need to get some relief. There are many methods today to treat prostate enlargement, such as prescribed medications, herbal remedies, non-surgical procedures, and in more severe cases, surgery. Read here how to treat your enlarged prostate and get back to normal.
The prostate is a small walnut shaped gland that wraps around the opening of the male urethra where it meets the bladder. Although the prostate gland is present at birth, it does not begin to grow until puberty and stops at age twenty. During a man's forties, the prostate gland begins to grow again as natural part of aging. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). An enlarged prostate can also occur as result of prostate cancer or a prostate infection.
• Stay hydrated. Urinary tract infections may disturb the prostate gland, which wraps around the urethra, and aggravate already labored urinary function due to an enlarged prostate. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to flush unwanted bacteria from the urinary tract and bladder.
• Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice increases the acidity of urine, making the urinary tract an unwelcome environment of bacteria which cause urinary tract infections. Drinking cranberry juice four times a day, in addition to the eight glasses of water, should increase your arsenal against urinary tract infections.
• Boost your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to protect prostate cells and have an anti-inflammatory affect. Fish, such as salmon, tuna, trout and other fatty and cold-water fishes, are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. You can also find flaxseed oil and fish oil capsules as a dietary supplement pill or powder.
• Eat plenty of fruit. This increases your body's natural production of Vitamin D, which promotes prostate health.
• Avoid sweets and fats. Obesity can aggravate prostate problems. Steering clear of high-fat and high-sugar foods can help your overall health as well as your prostate health.
• Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to flush out your bladder and prevent bladder infections. Drink cranberry juice daily, which increases the acidity in your urine and reduces the chances of infection in your bladder, kidneys and prostate. Avoid drinking anything after 7 p.m. to reduce your need to urinate during the night.
