Most of us commit this common mistake – the more we are being prohibited from something, the more we are being captivated to do it! However, if we are talking about our health, then we must strictly follow the rules of do's and don'ts.

A healthy life prohibits any certain diseases such as kidney stones. To avoid such disease, we must observe proper and balance diet. Hence, we must keep away from the precursors of kidney stones - foods not to eat should be noted.

Our kidneys function as a blood filter removing all the excess mineral salts and other soluble wastes that are being excreted through our urine. The formation of kidney stones occurs when our urine becomes too much concentrated with minerals that it could no longer be dissolved.

These undissolved particles will clamp together and form into hard stones. Kidney stones are considered one of the most painful urologic disorders, thus if could prevent it then we should. As much as possible, let us say NO to kidney stones - foods not to eat are the following:

1. Calcium Intake. About 80% of all kidney stones are composed of minerals especially calcium that is usually in combination with oxalate. Calcium is actually used by the body for many important functions, however an excess of it will be absorbed by our kidneys. The biggest portion of calcium in the diet comes from milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt.

Other sources would include dark green leafy vegetables that have significant amount of calcium. We could also get calcium from over-the-counter medicines and vitamins. Too much calcium in the urine is medically known as hypercalciuria that could be prevented by regulating the amount of calcium in the diet.

2. Oxalate Intake. Oxalates are usually found in the intestines as with calcium. The presence of oxalates reduces calcium absorption while its formation is caused by the insufficient amount of calcium in the intestines. The excess number of oxalates will also be absorbed by the kidneys and too much this is known as hyperoxaluria.

There are many foods that contain large amounts of oxalate.  Eight  of these would be the major source for raising urine oxalate levels namely rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts, beets and tea. Other oxalate-rich foods would include beans, celery, fruit cake, egg plant, sweet potato, and wheat bran among others.

3. Minimize Sugar, Sodium, Animal Protein and Vitamin C. Too much sugar, sodium and animal protein intensify the production of calcium or calcium oxalate stones. Whereas, excessive vitamin C intake increases oxalate production.

Prevention is much more preferred rather than treatment of any diseases. If we love our health, stay away from kidney stones – foods not to eat should be out from our diet!
