The Difference: Eczema Vs. Psoriasis

by linkroll

posted in Health and Fitness : Eczema

Eczema and psoriasis are two skin diseases that are sometimes confused due to certain symptoms of the diseases being similar. However upon closer examination these diseases are very different and are caused by different things, need different treatments, and are distributed differently depending on the type of skin disease. There are a number of factors that can help you distinguish the two diseases depending on the age of the sufferer, the appearance of the skin, and environmental factors. Determining the type of skin disease in the case of eczema vs. psoriasis as quickly as possible is important so that correct treatment can be carried out.

Eczema vs. psoriasis is characterized by skin that is itchy, scaly, and in severe cases may be raw, red, and may also bleed. Raised patches of reddish skin on the other hand indentify psoriasis; a white or silvery layer usually covers these patches and the knees, elbows, scalp and lower back are most commonly affected. Eczema of the skin is usually caused by environmental factors such as exposure to chemicals, excessive hand washing, and in some cases food allergies. The areas that are affected by skin lesions can also help to determine if a person is suffering from eczema or psoriasis.

The treatment of eczema vs. psoriasis usually involves the use of moisturizing creams that help to maintain the natural oils of the skin. Avoiding certain chemicals, soaps, and other environmental factors such as constant hand washing is also prescribed to those suffering from eczema to prevent the diseases from getting worse. On the other hand skin lesions that appear on the inner arm and the back of the knees are usually symptomatic of eczema. Eczema can however be managed and controlled with the use of topical ointments and treatments; it is also advisable to avoid contact with skin irritants to prevent further outbreaks.

In the case of psoriasis there are different types of treatment that can be used to bring the disease under control and ultimately to cure the disease. Some treatments will work for both eczema and psoriasis, though this is not always the case as some cases of either disease need specific treatments. It is important to avoid scratching when dealing with both diseases as broken skin can lead to the possibility of bacterial infection. The type of treatment for both diseases will be determined by the severity of the case and how early treatment is administered by a dermatologist.
