The form can be placed anywhere on your website and even on every page if you want. You should run your website statistics software, if you have any, to find out the main entry and exit pages of your website. You should then put a form on each of these pages. You might also want to have an entry and exit pop-up. Whether you like them or not, pop-ups work very well and your site should have at least an exit pop-up on the most popular exit page (which is normally also the entry page!).
Opt-in forms are often placed on a special landing page called a ‘squeeze page’. This is a page that is specially designed for list building, and contains good compelling reasons what the visitors should complete the form, and even a free gift for doing so. After all, most people regard their name and email address as being important to them, and why should they give it to you for nothing? You should offer them something in return for them.
This could take the form of a free newsletter that you can send every week or even every month. It could be a course of lessons relevant to your niche, or even a free ebook. The newsletters and free courses are the most effective in promoting sales because you can bring your products to your visitors attention over a regular period. It generally takes up to seven or eight viewings of a product before a decision to purchase is made.
Whatever it is that you offer, it must be relevant to your product or website. You don’t offer somebody a free fishing fly for signing up for a newsletter on goldfish! The gift must be something that you, yourself, would like to have. Whatever it is that you are offering, you must also make it clear that the person filling in the form is giving you permission to contact them. Don’t offer a free book in exchange for their email address without making it clear that the address is wanted for more than just sending the book!
A well design opt-in form placed on squeeze page or not too intrusive pop-up can help to build your email list very rapidly and get you off to a good start in your internet marketing career. Anybody who knows how to build an email list will always have an advantage over somebody who neglects to do so.
