Kick The Oil Habit - Look To The Sun For Heating and Cooling

by Linda A.

Today, everybody is talking about the energy crisis, and just about everyone is trying to solve the problem. Every country in the world is facing some kind of energy problem, shortages, rising cost, pollution and every one of them is looking for less expensive, less polluting, alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are simple and highly affordable ways of ensuring comfortable living spaces that enhance humankind’s long-term possibilities and avoid damaging the life-support systems of the planet.

A home must be comfortable in summer as well as winter. When designing a solar home, carefully plan to accommodate and benefit from the sun’s shifting patterns and other natural, seasonal cycles. Before finalizing a building plan, spend time at the site at different times of the day, and pay attention to the sun, wind and weather. Incorporate enough windows to provide plenty of daylight, but do not make the mistake of assuming that solar heating requires extraordinary allocations of wall space to glass. An over glazed building will probably overheat. A highly insulated and well constructed home with proper number and distribution of high quality windows does not need much energy to maintain comfortable temperatures year-round.

If a product does cost more, however don’t dismiss it. The price difference may be offset by savings on another product or by reductions in energy costs. Also, don’t let builders who are unfamiliar with the wide array of environmentally friendly materials dissuade you. Do your own research, check out the materials.

Approach your home building project in this matter. Try to utilize all of the elements that are there to work with, in the best possible for a given location and set of circumstances. Try to think positively about each aspect of your home, your design, and your alternative energy options. Remember that the sun is everywhere, and with careful planning you can build a home that harmonizes with solar energy.
