When to Change Your Workout Routine by Kai Lo

Do you go to the gym to do the same workouts all the time? If you are always doing the same things over and over again, you will hit a plateau. Not only would you hit a plateau, it will eventually get very boring, and you would end up stop going to the gym anymore.

I usually change my routines once a month. I would write down the workouts I want to do, reps, sets, and rests. My current 4 weeks program I am doing has a lot of circuits (doing 4 or more exercises one after another with no rest as one set). Doing circuits can save a lot of time, and very effective. One of my circuits consist of bent-over lateral raise, lateral raise, front raise, and pull ups, and I would repeat this 3 times with no rest.

You can be creative and create your own circuits. Perhaps like Squats, Chin-ups, Closed-Grip Bench Press, and Upright Rows as one circuit. Some days you can do supersets (doing an exercise after another as a set with minimum rest) for chest and back. Such as, bench pressing and bent-over barbell rows are effective in building mass. I wouldn't do superset or more exercises at once for very heavy workouts. If you are trying to build up strength and mass at once, you need longer rests so you can put all your energy in one set. For example, bench pressing 3-5 reps for 5 sets, you are going to need 2+ minutes of rest. If you superset this with something else, you won't have enough energy for the next set.

Working out is hard work, but it shouldn't be boring and stale. You can also try getting trained to work on advanced techniques. You can look up advanced techniques online, such as the "clean and jerk" and "snatch", but don't do them by yourself unless you are properly trained as they would most likely cause injury. Get a personal trainer!

There are plenty of effective routines you can follow by looking them up online. Programs usually last 4-6 weeks. Keep the exercises fun and exciting, good luck.
