Desks are a central part of America's education and business affairs. They are probably even a significant part of your home life. The interesting note is that these aren't too far off from school desks, showing that the world sort of works toward this model. School desks are obviously a bit different. We can't have large cubicles in each classroom. The drawers were sacrificed for space and replaced with integrated storage options under the desk. The chair is attached to keep the rows orderly and prevent innovative pranksters from forming an elegant chair wall in front of the door. Again, just about every school in the United States uses this model. It's just the accepted average.

There are also contemporary desks available for companies and individuals who want something that's a bit different. These are effectively the same. They generally just use a bit different of a style to make things look refined in a new age sort of way. There are obviously some truly modern and unique options available for you if it's strangeness you want. For straight functionality, you will probably want to stick with a refined option from one of the major dealers though.
