The present process is a very interesting process.  If you go somewhere to have a birthday party like a bowling alley or a fun center, they will have a party host write down the presents each child gives the birthday child so the parents can send out thank you notes.  This list also tells the parents who is cheap and who knows what is appropriate in their circle of children.  Be careful what you get these kids or you might ruin your kid's life.
It was always easier as a kid.  You could run around and eat pizza and drink soda without being reprimanded at birthday parties.  You did not notice the moms in the other room talking up a storm about how to best raise their kids.  But if you were to notice, there was always that one parent that was sitting on the couch because they were being ignored by the others.  They had said something disagreeable and distasteful.  It didn't matter that they brought Estes Rockets and did everything else right; his kid is never going to get invited back.
You have to make small talk with all the parents at the party, making sure that you do not say anything out of line about the big things that other people may feel very strongly about.  They call it small talk for a reason and you really should just stick to the things that don't really matter like music, movies and colors.  Political views and racist comments should come out much later when the friendships have been solidified.  So for now, stick those ho model trains that you bought over by the pile of presents, drink no more than two alcoholic drinks, and let your kid bowl and play laser tag without a stress in the world.
