Positive Attitude - Look Back With Pride by Andrew Grant

It seems that modern life just gets faster and faster. We seem to have to do more and more each day and each day seems to have fewer minutes.

That enormous time pressure means that making positive changes can be even more difficult as we find it hard enough to fit in all the stuff we have to do let alone find time to do something entirely new and different. All of which makes staying motivated tougher than ever.

However, there is one motivation booster that it is well worth finding a little time for each day. Taking stock.

Always try to find ten, quiet minutes towards the end of the day; maybe just before you fall asleep, to look back over your day with pride. Itemize everything that you did today, but with special emphasis on the good stuff.

Think about the people you helped, even in the tiniest way. The doors you held open, the drivers you waved ahead, the colleague you assisted and the child whose questions you answered.

Think about the things that you did well. The job at work that you finally finished; the new one that just got off to a great start; the quality time that you spent with your family; the support that you gave to your friend.

Remember too the time that you saved, the problems you avoided and the smiles that you brought to others.

Sure, there will be things that you’re not so proud of, but this is not about guilt and recrimination; they are wasteful and needless emotions. Simply note those acts and omissions, resolve not to repeat them tomorrow and go back to congratulating yourself on what you have managed.

This is the one time when it is OK to feel smug and to take pride in your achievements. Relive the good feelings that your positive actions gave you and store them up for the moments when you need help to get through more difficult times.

Then, just before you finally drift off, take yourself back further to other times in your life when you did great work and felt good about yourself. Bring those feelings back to life and savour the moment and I guarantee, that not only will you have a good night’s sleep but you will wake in a positive mood the next day.
