If you are reading this then you are probably in the process of trying to make a change in your life for the better. That might involve starting a business, self improvement or learning new skills. Although, ultimately those changes will benefit not only you but those around you; while the change is taking place, others can sometimes see the process as a selfish one that excludes them and gives them worries for the future.
Here are 3 ideas to ensure that they understand your reasons and are supportive and involved.
Idea #1 – Talk to them. This is often one of the most difficult decisions to make if you are planning major changes. The people who are close to you will always try to be protective and that protection often comes in the form of warnings and advice against whatever you plan to do. Without meaning to, they can often be very negative and it is fair to say that those closest to you are often the biggest threats to your dreams.
However, if you are prepared for this then it is always better to involve them. Tell them what you intend to do and why. Explain how the change, though perhaps difficult to understand, will ultimately benefit them, by making you a happier and more fulfilled person, who will be easier to live with. Ask for their support or at the very least, the indulgence to give you the time and space to do what you need to do and to refrain from criticism unless you ask for it. If they truly love you, they will understand.
Idea #2 – Make a contract. In return for their help and support, you must offer an equal level in return. Forge an agreement with them, that though you may need to spend time absorbed in your plans, you will set aside specific periods of time when they will receive your full attention.
Offer perhaps to take them somewhere special every Saturday. Plan activity nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays when all the family gets together and has fun, or if it’s just the two of you, why not offer to go to a class and learn a new skill together.
Idea #3 – Use their support. If your family is completely supportive of you, as opposed to simply leaving you to do your own thing, then make sure to leverage their involvement. Think how they could help you to achieve your goal.
If you’re starting a business, could your spouse help with production or administration? Could your children, be involved in creativity? Is there a friend who can help set up your workshop?
By involving them directly in the process you will receive valuable perceptions from an alternative viewpoint which will give you great insight into how others might see your business.
If your change is to get fit; could they work out with you? If you are studying for promotion, could they help with the learning process? Every minute that those around you spend helping you to achieve your goal will bring you closer and forge deeper bonds for the future.
Making changes can be tough and lonely, so any love, support and assistance you can gain along the way will only speed you faster towards your goal.
