Hangover cures come in many forms, both medicinal and mythical, but doctors will admit that they aren’t even entirely certain what a hangover is, so treating one can be tricky. What doctors do know is that alcohol dehydrates the body by blocking the hormone in your kidneys responsible for preventing you from running to the bathroom every 10 minutes. So in effect, with each drink you put into your body, you lose more water. Research on hangover cures is scarce (who would volunteer for that clinical trial?) and there’s no immediate cure available, but some of the suggestions below just might do the trick.
Drink copious amounts of water. This is the best advice anyone with a hangover can take. If your head feels like someone repeatedly blasted a
train air horn in your ear all night, the only effective cure is to re-hydrate your body. Buy some Gatorade. As your body breaks down alcohol, you lose lactic acid, which prevents your body from producing glucose and electrolytes, leaving you feeling woozy, clumsy and weak. Sports drinks like Gatorade will help to replenish these losses. Pop a couple aspirins (or ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Over-the-counter pain relievers will at least make you feel a little better. Have a morning drink. Alright this may be more on the mythical side of cures, but legend has it that a stiff morning drink is the best cure for an abominable hangover. Try it if you must, but you might be safer just sticking with a plate of greasy eggs and hash browns.
