I spent four "great" years in the military where I experienced many evils. During my time in the military I went through hard ships that no man should go through. I saw friends destroyed in front of my eyes and had to take the lives of men that still haunt me till this day. Although he would later take his life sometime after we left Iraq that was the last time I got to talk to the friend that I knew before we left for the military together. After we got out of Iraq together the memories of what had happened left him so scared that it was too much for him to handle. These scars that I must carry are deep ones but, for my country I would indeed do it once again.
But there is one thing that I could just not get through. While I was in boot camp they forced up to undergo many disgusting things that made my stomach turn, we would tell each other that once we got to infantry training that would all stop and we would be able to at least be more hygienically. But, when I got there it was even worse than boot camp there we had to go through longer periods in the field and more and more of us would catch infections, there we told each other that it would end once we got to the fleet. And for awhile I thought we would until training started and after that they sent us to Iraq and there we would only come back to the wire twice a month which meant only showering twice a month. Of course with the water bottles we could wash ourselves but our beds where only our clothes on top of a dirty pad. That is why I think the military should look in to duvet covers as an essential piece of gear.
