Also referred to as Venereal Disease (VD), sexually transmitted diseases or STD's is an illness with a significant probability of transmission between humans. Transmission of the STD is most likely to occur during sexual contact and most specifically anal sex, oral sex, and vaginal intercourse. STD's can also be transmitted by using an IV needle, or through childbirth and breast-feeding.
Recently, STI --- sexually transmitted infection --- has become the terminology that is commonly used and has a broader range of application, such as with a person who is not showing signs of the disease but is a carrier and has the capability of infecting others. STI's are nothing new and have been around for hundreds of years. Up until the 1990's, they were just defined and described as venereal diseases.
If you are sexually active and you want to protect yourself from infection, then you need to take certain precautions, especially if your sexual activity involves more than one partner (which is ill advisable anyway). Furthermore, certain STD's can cause severe physiological and psychological conditions, and can even kill you. In so many words, your life depends on taking steps to prevent STD's. Here are a few ways that you can avoid being infected.
Step #1- Practice safety--The first thing you need to do before getting physically close to a partner is to make sure that they are "clean" so you are not at risk. Now this may sound like a no-brainer, but you would be amazed at the number of individuals who just engage in sexual activity without even giving this a second thought. Look for the following warning signs with the male or female genitalia:
* Odd discolorations
* Rashes
* Sores
If there is anything wrong or worrisome about the penis or the vagina of your potential sexual partner, then use a condom --- better yet, avoid having sex with them altogether until you know that they cannot infect you with anything.
Step #2 - Protect yourself by using a condom. Again, this is just common sense. Remember that you are not just having intercourse with your partner. You are having sex with all of their former partners as well. If you have the slightest bit of doubt about having intercourse with that person, use a condom! Even if you think that you are not at risk, it is still a good idea. Once you have the trust in your partner that they are clean, and then you can stop using one.
Step #3 - Avoid having sexual intercourse with multiple partners- The signs and symptoms of being infected characteristically do not show up for several weeks, so you could be having sex with another partner and unknowingly infect them. Avoiding having multiple partners increases the odds that you will avoid being infected with an STD yourself.
If you truly want to ensure that you won't contract an STD, then the only real guarantee comes from total abstinence, and in today's world, the likelihood of that happening is remote, so at least think about the steps to prevent STD's that are listed above.
