Home Based Business Ideas - Getting The Basic Essentials

Before somebody can start a home based business, there are a few things that they must have that are critical to any home based business regardless of which one they are getting into. These are things that I personally would be lost without and I've been working out of my home for over four years now. Please go through this checklist and make sure that you have each item covered.

The first thing you need, obviously, is a computer. But what people fail to realize is that computers don't last forever. Hard drives crash, big time. And more often than not, all the work that you have done when this happens goes out the window. So please, before you even begin to work online, make sure you have a reliable backup drive to keep all your work on. This way, if something happens, you're protected.

Another thing you want is a business phone. If you're going to be dealing with people online, you want to put on a professional face. By allowing people to contact you by phone, you are doing this. The last thing you want is for somebody to be calling you and have your kids answer the phone. You want a private line with an answering machine attached, one that broadcasts a professional message. Trust me on this...appearance is everything.

Another thing you are going to need is tax and record keeping software. If you plan to make money online, you have to track everything, especially if you live in a country where you are required to pay income tax. Not keeping accurate records is a sure fire way to get audited by your taxing body, whoever it is. In the United States, the IRS can be VERY unforgiving.

Another thing you want to get is a safety deposit box. You're probably wondering why. Well, you're going to have a lot of things in running your business that you're not going to want anything to happen to. Let's face it, things happen. Fires break out and homes burn down. We don't like to think about it, but it's a fact of life. By having your most essential items in a safety deposit box, you at least avoid having to replace items that would be difficult or even impossible to replace.

These are just a few of the things that you're going to need. In future articles, I'll cover some more essentials that will make running a home based business a lot easier on the nerves. I have learned all this from very painful experience.
