The kids come running in and tell you once again that the garage door remote is lost. What do you do? Replace it of course. There are many popular replacement units available. Since all garage door openers work in a similar way, they can be programmed to work with a variety of garage doors.

As a rule of thumb, the universal garage door remote will work with the majority of the most popular brands of garage doors. There may also be times when a universal remote will not work with a particular brand of garage openers. The only option left to the homeowner at this point is to get another remote from the garage opener manufacturer.

There are two methods to program a universal garage door remote. The first method uses the switches inside the remote that will connect the remote with your particular brand of opener. The second type is programmed using a key pad on the motor housing.

Several brands of garage door remotes come with a variety of options, with one to three buttons that are used to control several doors or doors with an automatic gate system. The remote is powered by batteries and they are relatively inexpensive at around $20 USD.

Busy homes have a reputation of little things like the garage door remote opener getting lost, among other things that mysteriously disappear into the nether reaches of the house. Fortunately, you aren't the only one this happens to. It happens quite often and that is why manufacturers created the universal garage door remote.

Department stores such as Sears carry the universal garage remotes, as well as home improvement stores such as Lowe's. The prices vary by brand and options that are available on the remote. When you find one that works with your particular garage door opener, buy two and keep one in reserve. Nothing can be more frustrating than trying to get to work and the garage door will not open because the remote is lost again.

The garage door opener that is universal is great for those who lose the things that are used on a daily basis. The search for the remote can be maddening, so it is just easier to have spares on hand. Rain, snow and other nasty weather conditions cause you to want that door to open remotely, and the universal remote that you keep in your car no matter how many others want it in their car makes it possible for you to get inside the garage door dry and warm.

Another reason you want a spare remote is a safety concern. If you live in an area that is not well lit or that has a lot of foot traffic at night, the remote allows you to get inside an enclosed area before leaving the safety of your car. This is sometimes a crucial factor in the decisions to keep an extra universal garage door remote on hand. It never hurts to have a spare on hand.
