Making a Home Inventory

by John Burford

When buying a homeowners insurance you will have to make a home inventory to record all your valuable possessions.

Every item that you want to be covered by the insurance policy must be included in this inventory: you should include any high value item you own.

At the beginning you might think you can do it in ten minutes, but as soon as you start you'll realize that it will take at least some hours.

You should allow at least one full day to create your home inventory, your house will be a total mess while you're at it, hence you'll have to spend a lot of time putting the house back in order: weekends are excellent for making a home inventory.

There are mainly two different approaches to create a good home inventory, both of them are equally effective, it's up to you to choose the one you prefer.

The first method consists in creating a list for each room, so you'll have several list of valuable items grouped per room.

The other method consist just in grouping objects, so you'll have groups of items: three TVs, two digital cameras, a laptop, two stereo systems etc.

You should write down the lists on a notepad and taking photos of every item with your digital camera, so you'll be able to see which model the stereo system was as well as the TV and any other items.

The list should be obviously stored in a safe place out of your house, at some relatives or perhaps in a safe deposit box.
