Various Ideas Regarding Shrubs And Woodland

The ground beneath deciduous shrubs and areas of woodland offers a convivial home to early snowdrops, cyclamen, daffodils and winter aconite. The winter tracery of bare branches allows maximum light and moisture to reach early flowering bulbs, corms and tubers, enabling them to complete most of their lifecycle before the canopy of leaves appears later in spring. For best results with snowdrops, buy growing bulbs in the green so that they g many years, in these conditions they will get off to a good start.

Common snowdrop will naturalize large areas of deciduous woodland, where they will revel in the cool, damp conditions if they are given a bed of moist leaf mould. Over many years, in these conditions they will create spectacular displays, providing a wonderful sight from mid to late winter, especially with the added drama of the winter sun penetrating the naked canopy of the trees to highlight the tracery of the branches and the virginal sheet below.

You can plant single and double varieties of bulbs in neighboring groups. Although majestic on a large scale, even 20 clumps will give huge pleasure on the edge of a woodland area or small copse in a domestic setting. Winter aconite colonize with the same effect, and if they are planted with snowdrops wonderful swirls of yellow and white will form on the woodland floor.

For the greatest impact, plant in groups distinct from the snowdrops and then allow a few clumps to intermingle. The aconites produce lots of seed. When they are ripe give nature a helping hand and spread them around the woodland floor. Before long you will be richly rewarded.
