Grassland Naturalized Bulbs - What You Have To Understand

Snowdrop, snowflake, winter aconite and the earliest daffodils, as well as a wide range of crocuses, create a sparkling display when they are naturalized in borders, grassland and woodland. Do not be surprised, however, if the bulbs, corms and tubers in the borders, which do not have to compete with grass and tree roots, multiply more quickly. Some genera adapt well to both meadow and woodland conditions, although be prepared for neutralization process to take longer.

Both common snowdrop and spring snowflake will grow well in grassed area, where winter and spring moisture are paramount and summer drought is avoided. Ideal conditions are the grassy swards between deciduous shrubs and around fruit trees, where other, later flowering bulbs are grown so that the grass is not cut short until after midsummer.

The same is true for winter aconite and anemone. To make the most of the display cut the grass in late autumn or early winter so that it is short enough for the mid to late winter flowers to be appreciated. Of the many crocus species, Crocus and its cultivars are among the most successful in grass, whether grown in sun or semi shade. These crocuses will self seed extensively, and although each flower is narrow and delicate, a well established group will create a broad sheet of blue when the sun shines and the petals open.

Golden petals will enjoy similar conditions. It will not self seeds but will mass up in clumps as the corms multiply below ground. Christ which is native to the turkey, has scented, creamy yellow flowers and will compete well in winter grassland. Cream beauty with creamy yellow flowers and lady killer, with blue, white edged flowers, are popular, widely available cultivars.
