Long Term Planting Scheme In A Garden. What You Should Know

For gardeners who want to experiment and are willing to change their spring borders regularly, the choice of color and the range of bulbs is vast. If you prefer a simpler approach with a longer term planting scheme, you also have an enormous choice but bear in mind that some bulbs are more reliable than others, and there is little doubt that some bulbs naturalize in borders better than others.

Remember, too, that your success with bulbs will depend on soil conditions and factors such as proximity to tree roots or hedges, and the aspect and rainfall in your garden. Sometimes it is difficult to determine why crown imperials grow exuberantly in some gardens for many years, but in others they will hardly flower at all after the first year. The same is sometimes true of the highly bred split corona daffodils.

Most daffodils will establish themselves well. They form good clumps and have a more natural appearance than bold, highly colored tulips. So, if you like informality, grow daffodils. Pipit is a favorite choice, long in flower, a good neutralizer and with beautiful lemon yellow flowers streaked with white. At 30cm or just a little taller, it is a real winner.

Tulips will naturalize best in well drained soil rather than in heavy clay. For best results be sure to plant bulbs at a depth of at least three times the size of the bulb. Among the best tulips to naturalize on loam or clay are Lapel and its close relatives. Lapel itself was introduced after World War 2 and is still one of the bestselling cultivars because of its vigor, boldness and reliability.
