Civil War Flags

Flags are an important part of any country today, and more so, in a war. Nowadays, it is just not used to signal the fact that, “We are here”, but it is used as an emblem of prestige. But did you know how these flags used to look like in the Civil War days? For example, the Union and the Confederate flags!

Surely, no history textbook would have taught you all of this until now. No wonder why, you are here. And this should provide you some information on Civil war flags.

And then, there is a whole list of Civil war flags from the United States of America. Here are some for your excerpts.

Civil War Captured Flags – 28th Virginia

The story about this flag is that the 1st Minnesota infantry captured this flag at Gettysburg. On capture, the flag was passed on to the Union Army, who further handed this flag over to the U.S War Department. The War Department processed the flag and assigned it as a spoil of war. Since then, the 28th Virginia flag is loaned or rented out for different Union veterans groups.

Treasury Flags on the site of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination

The mortal remains of Abraham Lincoln were carried out of the Ford Theater in a box, which was draped with five flags in all. Three of them were American flags, and two of them were Treasury flags. And this really is the difference! The two Treasury flags were of their kinds in those years, as there were not many treasury flags around then.

The story about this flag as noted by many civil war historians is that this was the flag that Abraham Lincoln clutched on to, as his assassin mercilessly fired bullets at him. As on date, both these flags are with the US Treasury. A replica of the flag was hung on the entrance to Ford Theater during the funeral procession of President Lincoln.
