Civil War Weapons

by Sharon Smith

posted in Arts and Entertainment : Humanities

Coming to think of it, the weapons that were used in Civil War days were nowhere as sophisticated as what you would find today. To the naked eye, Civil War Weapons may seem outdated for you at best, especially when you look at them. But a glance through the history books, and you would find that the list of casualties during these days were pretty high.

These weapons were indeed considered effective for fighting those days. And it was not that advancements to the weapons did not take place at all? It did, and when it mattered the most, these weapons delivered to the deadliest manner possible.

And just so you know, some weapons you would find having been used in the Civil War days, were conceived only then. In fact, before the Civil War broke out, no one would have heard of some of the weapons used.

  • Here is a list of Civil War weapons used with a brief description of the firearms
  • Handheld Firearms

Colt Revolvers, Remington 1858, and the Lemat Revolvers were used extensively by soldiers as a part of their hand-held weaponry. The most popular amongst them, which was used by the Union soldiers, was the Colt Revolver that was a six shot, 0.44 caliber revolver, one of the first of its kinds those days.

Rifles and Muskets

This is where a lot of advancements could be seen during the Civil War days. Before the Civil War began, soldiers used rifles without muzzle loaders, and shot iron balls at a conical trajectory. The inception of muzzle loaders saw all this changing. Soldiers could aim at a far-away distance, sometimes at the target being almost a mile away and shoot them down effectively.

The Springfield, the Enfield and the Sharps were used extensively during the Civil War as rifles and muskets. The Springfield model needs some explanation here as it was indeed very popular. It had a 40 inch long barrel, and was capable of firing a 0.58 caliber Minie Ball. This indeed was one of the heavier firearms then, weighing all of 9 pounds.

Grenades

Not many people know that Grenades were used in the Civil War too. The North had their own version of Grenades, and called them Ketchum Grenades, which used to explode on hitting the target.

Clearly, Civil war weapons have a lot in store for us to learn on how early days’ firearms brought about a significant change in the way how wars would be fought in subsequent days, months and years to come.
