posted in Legal : Identity Theft

There are many ways in which an individual can be robbed. Some of those specific ways include the thieves breaking into an individual’s home, ransacking that home and taking items of great value and particular meaning to the family. In addition, an individual can also have their vehicle stolen or an even greater and more dangerous way of being robbed is through a mugging or armed robbery experience.

In addition, one additional way that an individual can be robbed in a more personal manner that does not necessarily involve the taking of personal items is through the individual action of identity theft. Therefore, it is important to know what identity theft is and how to report an identity theft scam.

What Is Identity Theft?

Identity theft is a crime in which a thief eventually misrepresents themselves as another individual. This misrepresentation is accomplished as the thief gathers together personal information about the individual as well as obtaining important numbers that the victim utilizes. Specifically, some of those important pieces of information that are part of the theft include the name, address, Social Security number, as well as banking account information, credit card numbers, etc.

Generally, this information can be gained in a number of ways. One of those ways is to go through an individual’s trash and sort through the personal papers in hopes of finding personal information that is reflected on the scraps of paper. In addition, if this information is gathered, then the individual can capture credit card offers and make application to those credit card companies utilizing the information that has been stolen.

Other ways that identity theft can occur is when hackers gain access to Internet websites that carry the customer’s information in their databases. Another way that identity theft can occur is if an individual responds to a fraudulent e-mail and in that e-mail response provides sensitive information regarding their personal accounts, credit card numbers or gives access numbers to their financial institutions.

How to Report an Identity Theft Scam

If an individual thinks that they have been the target of an identity theft scam or that information has been compromised, it is important to know how to report an identity theft scam. Specifically, it is important to report an identity theft scam to the police department so that the proper documentation can be filed.

Once this has been accomplished it is important to contact the three credit bureaus and report an identity theft scam so that these agencies can put a credit freeze on the victim’s account. In addition, it is important to report an identity theft scam to the various financial institutions that may have been compromised with the giving of this information.
