Identity theft is on the rise as being one of the most fast growing crimes in the United States. Over the years, there have been over nine million Americans that have been victims of some type of identity theft. Many of these victims end up spending a lot to time and money to clean up the financial mess created by the identity thief. To prevent yourself from becoming a victim, you should take some time to learn about the causes of identity theft.

One of the causes of identity theft is a stolen purse or wallet. It can be very easy for a thief to use the personal information such as a driver’s license found in your wallet or purse to open financial accounts. You should make sure that all personal information is left in a secure place until it is needed. For example, a lot of people keep their social security in their purse or wallet. But unless you are applying for a job or government program on a daily basis, you don’t use your card everyday. Therefore, you should not carry your social security card around until you know you will need it.

Identity thieves are able to take over your identity by stealing your mail. Using stolen mail such as credit card statements and credit card applications, the thief will be able to make online purchases using your credit card information. Mail thieves like to visit rural areas because these areas are more isolated than urban areas. If you can, you should have all of your important mail such as bank and credit card statements mailed to a secured locked mailbox such as a post office box.

The internet is becoming a more popular place for identity theft. As technology continues to change and grow, internet thieves are getting smarter and creative with their identity theft scams. They are using fake website signup pages to steal your personal log in username and password information. You give your sign in information directly to the internet thieves when using these fake website pages to sign into your account. You never use any anonymous access link that is send to your email from an unknown source. It is best to always go directly to your bank or credit card website to access your accounts.

Just by remembering some of the causes of identity theft, you can reduce your chances of becoming an identity theft victim. It is very important to always keep your personal information in safe place. Remember anyone including you can always become a victim.
