Identity theft is a very common and serious crime. Thieves take the personal information of another person and use it for financial gain. The worst part is that most people are completely unsuspecting and only after they realize that their money is already gone do they figure out that something is wrong. The history of identity theft is very important to learn about in order to become aware of the proper preventative steps you can take.
People often assume that when the Internet came out this is when identity theft started but this is isn’t the case. The history of identity theft is an ugly one. Although relatively short, identity theft has been very common for about five years now and the rates of this crime are only continuing to increase. This was when these crimes first started occurring and so of course people had no idea about them and a lot of the time would fall for the scam.
Identity thieves began to realize that they would have to find another way to gain a person’s personal information. While some do still use incentives to try and swindle their way into attaining a person’s information via telephone, few do. Once they had offered the incentive to the victim they were usually able to get all the personal information that they needed. The next time the victim knows, they are thousands of dollars in debt and have no idea who did it or where they could possibly be.
Dumpster diving is another way of attaining someone’s personal information. Again, at first people were not aware that this was going on and so a lot of people ended up falling victim to identity theft. They still use dumpster diving to get what they need but again, people are smarter now and more cautious with what they are throwing in the trash. Make sure that you shred all important documents before tossing them
Even if you only rip them in half thieves are still able to piece them together. Never before had it been easier for people to attain other’s personal information and use it to their advantage. People need to understand just how serious a crime this is. Identity thieves had the benefit of being anonymous online so it certainly made things a great deal easier for them.
