Is There a Harsh Enough Punishment for Identity Theft?

by linkroll

posted in Legal : Identity Theft

Identity theft has become one of the worst and most common crimes in the world. More and more people are becoming victims of this crime and it makes one wonder what the punishment for identity theft is and whether it is harsh enough. Identity theft is a crime that occurs when one person steals another person’s identity and uses it for improper purposes. There are various ways that a person can steal your identity including rummaging through your trash and even being blatant enough to call on the phone and pretend to be a bill collector to get you to give out personal information.

Once they have enough personal information they can start opening up bank accounts and credit cards in your name, taking out loans and doing whatever else they can to ring up debt in your name and keep all the money to themselves. Once they have the information that they need, they can go ahead and start opening up accounts for loans and credit cards and racking up debt in your name. The worst part is that most people never see it coming and only realize that something is wrong once it is too late. The punishment for identity theft at first was not even close to being harsh enough.

Under Federal law according to the laws on punishment for identity theft, all criminals charged with this offense are sentenced from three to five years which is a significant increase from what it once was. Now the penalties for identity theft have been increased by five years. This should be frightening to criminals and hopefully ward some of them off. The penalties weren’t half as strict as this even just a few years ago which was one of the main reasons that there were so many perpetrators committing this crime because they knew that even if they did get caught they wouldn’t be in much trouble.

Of course the criminals need to be caught before they can be charged. This is why people need to make sure that they know what to look for and how to spot an identity thief. Make sure that you are not doing careless things that could cost you a ton of money if put into the wrong hands. Don’t leave bank receipts at ATMs after taking out money and never throw out personal documents from the mail without shredding them first.

The punishment for identity theft is only going to continue to get stricter because people are starting to realize just how serious a crime this really is. Have your credit report automatically emailed to you on a monthly basis. Just remember that if you ever think something may be wrong and think that you may be a victim of identity theft that you need to contact the authorities right away. Always make sure that you are safe rather than sorry.
