Explaining Examples of Identity Theft

posted in Legal : Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the most commonly committed crimes in the world today. Even with all the discussion over it, there are still a lot of people who don’t know what it’s all about. There is no single way for a person to commit identity theft and instead there are a few ways that a person could steal your identity and start racking up bills in your name. There are a few examples of identity theft that will help to show the different ways that these criminals work and how they can gain access to your personal information.

The most common way that these thieves steal identities is by rummaging through trash. Dumpster rummaging is an activity in which these people go through trash whether they are just looking through it while it is sitting on the side of the road or they actually go along the street to collect and take home so they can go through them more thoroughly. Dumpster rummaging is one of the easiest ways for them to gain the information they need because so many people forget to shred their important documents before tossing them out. Make sure that you shred up all your mail before throwing away and especially ensure that you never throw out old driver’s licenses, health cards and other identification before destroying it.

There are other examples of identity theft as well, such as when these criminals use a telephone call to gain the information they need. They will probably pretend to be some sort of a bill collector and start asking you for your name, birth date, social security number and those sorts of things. They will usually pretend to be a credit card company or some other financial institution and try to get information such as your name, address and social security number. Be careful when you are talking on the phone and always make sure that you know who you are talking to before you go ahead and give out any personal information.

Phishing is another method that is often used to gain a person’s personal information. There are some people who have become a victim of identity theft after falling for a phishing scam. Phishing takes place online and usually the thieves will dispatch certain malware applications to your computer which will then allow them to access your files and get the information that they need to begin opening accounts in your name and racking up debt. It is a scary thing to know that someone could access your personal computer files that easily which is why you need to always have properly running and updated antivirus software.

Identity thieves usually steal a few people’s identity at once so that they can profit that much more from it. It is important to do what you can to protect yourself and guard against this crime. Thousands of people around the world have fallen victim to this scam without even knowing that anything was going on. Identity thieves take people by surprise and you want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to prevent this from happening to you.
